Ancient Rites is a foundational pillar of the Belgian extreme metal scene, evolving from a raw, tragedy-stricken black metal outfit into a sophisticated purveyor of 'Heritage Metal.' Formed in 1988, the band's early history was marked by the deaths of several founding members, a period of trauma that hardened their resolve and cemented their status in the global underground.

Their sound identity is defined by a transition from the blistering speed of 'The Diabolic Serenades' to the symphonic, mid-tempo grandeur of 'Fatherland' and 'Dim Carcosa.' Musically, they are characterized by the interplay between Erik Sprooten's sharp guitar work and Domingo Smets' atmospheric synth layers. Gunther Theys remains the central figure, whose lyrical focus on European history, mythology, and Flemish identity provides a scholarly depth rarely seen in the genre.
