Ampop

Ampop is an Icelandic ensemble formed in 1998 in Reykjavík, originally as a duo consisting of Kjartan F. Olafsson and Biggi Hilmarsson.

Their name, a portmanteau of 'ambient' and 'pop,' serves as a literal manifesto for their sound identity. Early in their career, they focused on electronic-based ambient textures, earning critical acclaim with albums like 'Nature Is Not a Virgin' and 'Made for Market.' Their evolution took a significant turn around 2005 when they added drummer Jón Geir to the lineup, shifting toward a more organic, song-oriented indie rock and dream pop aesthetic. This transition was marked by the success of the single 'My Delusions,' which gained traction in the UK via BBC Radio 1 and led to a notable performance at SXSW. Culturally, they sit within the same lineage as other Icelandic exports like Sigur Rós and Múm, though Ampop leans more heavily into traditional pop structures and downtempo electronics. Their work is characterized by breathy, intimate vocals, lush synth arrangements, and a production style that emphasizes atmospheric depth over rhythmic aggression. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the late-90s IDM/ambient scene and the mid-2000s indie-pop explosion.
