American Football

Intricate, interlocking guitars and jazz-inflected drums create a landscape of suburban nostalgia. The sound of growing up and leaving things behind.

02Why You'll Love This

American Football sounds like the exact moment summer turns to autumn in a quiet college town. Their music is defined by clean, shimmering electric guitars that weave around each other in complex, mathematical patterns, yet the result never feels cold or academic. Instead, it feels deeply intimate, like a whispered conversation in a dimly lit room. The drums provide a restless, jazzy foundation that keeps the songs moving even when the mood is at its most still and contemplative. What truly sets them apart is the juxtaposition of technical precision and raw emotional honesty. While many of their peers in the 90s emo scene leaned into aggression and distortion, American Football opted for clarity and space. The occasional appearance of a lonely trumpet adds a layer of sophisticated melancholy, elevating their sound from simple indie rock to something more cinematic and enduring. It is music for the overthinkers and the nostalgics. Start with their 1999 self-titled debut, often referred to as LP1. It is the blueprint for the entire Midwest emo genre, containing the quintessential track 'Never Meant.' From there, explore LP3 to hear how they evolved into a more expansive, atmospheric post-rock sound while keeping their signature emotional core intact.

American Football are an American midwest emo band from Urbana, Illinois, originally active from 1997 to 2000. The band was formed by guitarist and singer Mike Kinsella (formerly of Cap'n Jazz, The One Up Downstairs, Joan of Arc, Owls and currently of Owen) and drummer Steve Lamos (formerly of The One Up Downstairs and currently of The Geese), and also included guitar player Steve Holmes. The band had few live performances and disbanded less than a year after releasing their self-titled album; still, they gained critical acclaim for that album, which merged the plain-spoken, confessional lyrics and melancholic/bittersweet arpeggios of Midwest Emo with the varying time signatures of Math Rock and the atmosphere of Post-Rock, providing a softer musical sensibility. Mike Kinsella explained the band's name thus: "My girlfriend had been in Dublin, Ireland visiting her family. One of the things she brought home for me was a flyer for a Chicago Bears exhibition game that said: "Come see American Football, featuring the most overpaid athletes in the world." Something about that statement made me think of rock bands, most of whom are the most overpaid musicians in the world. When I suggested it as a name, the other guys thought it was dumb. Still, for whatever reason, we kept it". The band regrouped in 2014 for two shows to promote the re-issue of their self-titled album. Read more on Last.fm.
