Formed in 1974 in Bamako, Mali, the duo Amadou & Mariam combined worldbeat and African popular music. Comprised of married couple Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia, the pair met at the Institute for the Young Blind. Throughout their career, they recorded for labels including Because Music and Nonesuch Records. Their work earned multiple awards for world music, reflecting a prolific partnership that lasted until Bagayoko's death in 2025.
