Intro

Altern 8 is the sound of the British rave explosion at its most chaotic and unrefined. Their music is a high-speed collision of heavy Detroit techno influences, frantic breakbeats, and a relentless DIY punk attitude. It is characterized by massive, distorted basslines and iconic, high-pitched vocal samples that feel like they were captured directly from a pirate radio broadcast. The energy is consistently at a fever pitch, designed specifically for the sensory overload of a 1991 warehouse party.

What makes them truly distinctive is their embrace of the 'hardcore' aesthetic, both sonically and visually. While their peers were often anonymous, Altern 8 leaned into a theatrical, almost cartoonish identity with their chemical warfare suits and dust masks. Musically, this translated into a 'more is more' approach: more sirens, more sub-bass, and faster tempos. They were masters of the 'rave stab' - those short, sharp synth chords that became the DNA of early 90s dance music.

To understand the movement, start with 'Full On .. Mask Hysteria'. It is a definitive document of the era, containing anthems like 'Activ 8' and 'E-Vapor-8'. These tracks are essential listening for anyone wanting to experience the raw, unpolished transition from house music into the faster, darker worlds of jungle and drum and bass.

Altern 8 is a British electronic music act, comprising Mark Archer and Chris Peat, until Peat left the group in 1994. Best known in the early 1990s, their trademark was electronic rave music with a heavy bass line. Notable Altern 8 tracks included "Activ 8", "E-Vapor-8", "Frequency", "Brutal-8-E", "Armageddon", "Move My Body", "Hypnotic St8" and "Infiltrate 202". On stage and in music videos, (such as the music video for "E-Vapor-8"), Altern 8's members wore their signature fluorescent yellow dust masks and green MK3 chemical warfare suits. The band signed with Network Records based in Stratford House, Birmingham, England.
