Altar

Formed in 1991 in Cluj-Napoca, Altar is a foundational pillar of the Romanian metal scene. Emerging shortly after the fall of communism, the band's early work, particularly 'The Last Warning' (1993), leaned into the death-thrash style prevalent in Europe at the time.

However, they quickly evolved into a more groove-oriented sound with 'Respect' (1995), which became a landmark release in Romanian rock history, earning them national acclaim and establishing them as a voice for a restless generation. Their sound identity is a hybrid of Sepultura-esque groove, Pantera's aggression, and the ideological grit of hardcore punk. Critically, they are regarded as one of the few bands from the region to successfully bridge the gap between underground metal and mainstream rock success without sacrificing their aggressive edge. Their influence on the Balkan metal circuit is significant, having shared stages with major international acts and maintained a consistent presence for over three decades. The band's later work, such as 'Mantra' and 'Rapsodia Românească', shows an integration of more diverse musical elements while retaining their signature confrontational lyrical stance.
