Sophisticated organ-led rock with a theatrical, cynical edge. Think soulful vocals meeting British social realism and a touch of vaudeville charm.
Alan Price sounds like the smartest person in a smoky 1970s London pub, leaning over a piano with a wry smile and a sharp observation about the state of the world. His music is a unique intersection of gritty Tyneside R&B and polished, theatrical pop. The core of the sound is his masterful keyboard work, particularly the swirling, rhythmic organ that defined early British rock, now tempered by a more mature, jazzy sensibility.
What truly sets him apart is his ability to blend the high-brow with the low-brow. He can pivot from a jaunty, almost circus-like melody to a devastatingly cynical piece of social commentary without losing his footing. There is a distinct 'Brechtian' quality to his work, especially in his film scores, where the music acts as both a participant and a detached narrator of the human comedy.
Start with the soundtrack to 'O Lucky Man!' to hear him at his most conceptually brilliant, or 'Between Today and Yesterday' for a more personal, autobiographical dive into his North East roots. It is essential listening for anyone who appreciates the intersection of rock, jazz, and the Great British songbook.
