Akasha, the British duo of Charlie Casey and Damian Hand, emerged during the peak of the UK's electronic 'trip-hop' and 'acid jazz' explosion in the mid-1990s. Originally signed to the influential Wall of Sound label, they carved out a niche by leaning heavily into a cinematic, jazz-noir aesthetic that was more instrumental and compositionally complex than many of their contemporaries.

Their sound identity is defined by the fusion of Hand's background in jazz (notably his saxophone work) with Casey's adeptness at breakbeat manipulation and atmospheric production. Their 1998 debut, Cinematique, remains a cult classic of the downtempo genre, praised for its ability to evoke specific visual narratives through sound. While the name Akasha is shared by several other acts (most notably a Costa Rican metal band), the UK duo represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of 'nu jazz,' bridging the gap between the dancefloor-oriented acid jazz of the early 90s and the more introspective, home-listening electronic music that followed.
