Airlock

Airlock is a Belgian trip-hop collective formed in 1997, emerging from the Brussels-based production trio Musicom (Pierre Mussche, Ernst Meinrath, and Renaud Charlier). Their sound identity is defined by a fusion of cinematic orchestration and downtempo electronic beats, a style heavily influenced by their early work scoring underground films and advertisements.

The addition of Scottish vocalist Esra Tasasiz provided the group's signature 'naive coo,' a breathy and ethereal vocal style that became their most recognizable trait. Their career is marked by a high-profile association with the 'CSI' television franchise, which utilized their atmospheric tracks to define the show's moody, investigative aesthetic. Despite a catastrophic studio fire that destroyed the masters of their second album, 'Symptomatic,' the band re-recorded the project with a more focused, minimalist approach. Critically, they are often compared to fellow Belgians Hooverphonic, though Airlock leans further into the 'noir' and 'urban night' atmospheres of the Bristol trip-hop scene. Their work stands as a bridge between the gritty trip-hop of the 90s and the more polished, commercial downtempo of the early 2000s.
