Agalloch

Agalloch is a seminal force in the 'Cascadian' atmospheric black metal movement, though their sound is far more eclectic than that label suggests. Formed in Portland in 1995, the band, led by John Haughm and Don Anderson, redefined the boundaries of extreme metal by integrating neofolk, post-rock, and doom.

Their 2002 masterpiece, 'The Mantle', is widely cited as a foundational text for the post-black metal genre, influencing a generation of artists to prioritize atmosphere and non-traditional instrumentation over raw aggression. Their career arc saw them move from the raw, folk-tinged black metal of 'Pale Folklore' to the more cinematic and expansive 'Ashes Against the Grain', and finally into the darker, more abrasive 'Marrow of the Spirit'. Culturally, they occupy a unique space as a 'bridge' band, attracting fans of indie rock and folk who might otherwise avoid extreme metal. Their aesthetic is deeply rooted in the imagery of the Pacific Northwest, Norse mythology, and transcendentalist philosophy. Despite a hiatus beginning in 2016, their 2023 reunion solidified their status as enduring icons of the American underground.
