2nd II None

Slick, sun-drenched G-funk with rubbery basslines and effortless chemistry. The sound of a Compton summer afternoon with the top down.

Intro

2nd II None occupies a vital niche in the West Coast hip-hop canon, primarily as the closest creative satellites to the legendary producer DJ Quik. Formed in Compton in 1987, the duo (KK and Gangsta D) provided the vocal counterpart to Quik's evolving 'Quikstyle' production, which emphasized live instrumentation, analog warmth, and complex musicality over the more abrasive sampling of their contemporaries.

Their 1991 debut on Profile Records is a cornerstone of the early G-funk era, predating the massive commercial explosion of 'The Chronic' while sharing its DNA of P-Funk worship and melodic sensibility. Despite a significant eight-year gap between their first and second albums due to label shifts and industry friction, they maintained a cult following through their association with the 'Quik's Groove' collective. Their work is characterized by a high-fidelity sonic sheen and a lyrical focus on the 'player' lifestyle, delivered with a technical precision that influenced the 'pimp-rap' subgenre. A and the more polished, R&B-infused rap of the late 90s.
