Intro

27 creates a sound that feels like it was recorded in the blue hour, somewhere between a dream and a memory. It is music of deep shadows and soft edges, where the rhythmic pulse of trip-hop meets the atmospheric weight of post-rock. Maria Christopher's voice is the focal point, a breathy, haunting presence that seems to float just above the instrumentation like mist over a dark lake.

What truly distinguishes the band is their ability to maintain a sense of heavy, metallic tension while remaining sonically delicate. Their connection to the Boston post-metal scene brings a structural discipline and a love for slow-burning dynamics that most indie bands lack. The result is a murky, immersive experience that rewards patient, focused listening.

Start with 'Animal Life' to hear their most cohesive blend of indie rock sensibilities and atmospheric experimentation. It is the perfect introduction to their world of quiet intensity and urban melancholy.

27 is an American rock band from Cambridge, Massachusetts. The band was formed by Maria Christopher, formerly of Dirt Merchants, and Ayal Naor in 1997. 27 is commonly categorized as a rock or indie rock band, but the genres lo-fi and emo have occasionally been used to describe them. 27 has toured extensively throughout Europe, North America, and Japan. In the Czech Republic, the band opened for Robert Plant. 27 shares a relatively close relationship with the band Isis. Bryant Clifford Meyer, of Isis, co-wrote the 27 song "1001 Gods", Aaron Turner, of Isis, contributed guitars and vocals to the song "April," and Jeff Caxide, of Isis, contributed to the song "Try." Maria Christopher and Ayal Naor, of 27, contributed to the songs "Weight," "Carry," and "The Beginning and the End" which appeared on the Isis album Oceanic. Of these, the song "Weight" was featured on the television show Friday Night Lights in 2007. 27 also released an album on Hydra Head Records, which is owned by Aaron Turner of Isis. As of 2014, Adam McGrath from Cave In has been playing live guitar in 27.
