Polished Australian pop-rock with soaring vocals and shimmering 80s production. Perfect for nostalgic drives and earnest, anthemic singalongs.
1927 embodies a very specific era of Australian music where the grit of the pub-rock scene met the high-gloss production of the late 1980s. Their sound is defined by Erik Weideman’s incredibly earnest, soaring vocals and Garry Frost’s meticulous melodic arrangements. It is music that feels expansive yet intimate, often capturing a sense of suburban longing and romantic nostalgia through shimmering guitar textures and atmospheric synth pads.
What truly distinguishes the band is their ability to craft massive, radio-ready hooks that don't sacrifice emotional weight. While many of their contemporaries leaned into harder rock or pure synth-pop, 1927 found a middle ground that felt both sophisticated and accessible. The production is unmistakably of its time, featuring the gated snare hits and lush reverb that defined the late-80s charts, yet the songwriting remains grounded in classic pop-rock fundamentals.
For the uninitiated, the multi-platinum debut album ...ish is the essential starting point. It contains the quintessential hits that defined their career, showcasing their knack for anthemic choruses and polished arrangements. It is the sound of a band capturing lightning in a bottle before the pressures of massive success and heavy touring began to take their toll.
1927 is an Australian pop rock band formed in 1987. The original lineup consisted of James Barton (drums), Billy Frost (bass guitar), his brother Garry Frost (guitar, keyboards), and Erik Weideman (vocals, guitar, keyboards). The band achieved mainstream success in the late 1980s and early 1990s with several hit songs. Their debut album, ...ish (1988), was a commercial success, reaching multi-platinum status, peaking at No. 1 on the Australian ARIA albums chart. It produced the hit single "That's When I Think of You", peaking at No. 6 on the Australian singles charts. At the 1989 ARIA Music Awards, the band won Breakthrough Artist – Album for ...ish and Breakthrough Artist – Single for "That's When I Think of You." Their second studio album, The Other Side (1990), continued their success. At the 1990 ARIA Music Awards, they won Best Video for "Compulsory Hero" directed by Geoffrey Barter. In 1992, the group released a third studio album, 1927, which reached the top 40. However, they disbanded the following year. In 2009, Weideman reformed 1927 with a new lineup.
