Wish Book Vol 1

Released in late 2012, Wish Book Vol 1 represents a significant stylistic pivot for Dan Deacon, moving away from the composed orchestral-pop of 'America' toward a more improvisational, sample-heavy plunderphonic approach. The EP consists of five extended tracks, most exceeding seven minutes, which utilize extreme pitch-shifting, time-stretching, and rhythmic looping. Unlike his primary studio albums, this work functions as a collage of 'found' sounds and vocal fragments, heavily influenced by the mashup culture of the era but filtered through Deacon's unique maximalist lens. It occupies a space between glitch-hop, IDM, and experimental art-pop. Critically, it is viewed as a more challenging, 'heads-down' companion to his more famous live-oriented material, showcasing his technical proficiency as a producer and his ability to find melodic resonance within chaotic digital environments. The track titles themselves suggest a surrealist, almost randomized logic that mirrors the music's construction.
