Winter

Released in 2010 as part of a seasonal EP series, Winter represents the earliest chapter of Larkin Poe's career following the dissolution of The Lovell Sisters. At this stage, Rebecca and Megan Lovell were deeply immersed in a sophisticated indie-folk and Americana sound, far removed from the 'gritty soul' and blues-rock identity they would adopt in the mid-2010s. The EP is characterized by its use of acoustic instruments - specifically mandolin, acoustic guitar, and cello - to create a 'chamber folk' atmosphere that feels both traditional and contemporary. Critical reception at the time noted the sisters' precocious songwriting and the uncanny, almost telepathic quality of their vocal harmonies. While later albums like Venom & Faith would focus on rhythm and swagger, Winter is a study in melody and atmosphere. It remains a fan favorite for its purity and its successful capture of a specific, cold-weather emotional palette, serving as a bridge between their bluegrass roots and their eventual rock stardom.
