Versus the World

Released in 2002, Versus the World is widely considered the breakthrough record that defined the modern Amon Amarth sound. Following three albums of faster, more traditional melodic death metal, the band intentionally downshifted the tempo, resulting in a heavier, more 'epic' feel that emphasized atmosphere over velocity. Vocalist Johan Hegg has noted this as their darkest and most melancholic work, a sentiment reflected in the lyrical focus on Ragnarok and the inevitable end of the world.
