Turning Dragon

Released in 2008 on Warp Records, Turning Dragon represents Chris Clark's pivot toward a harder, more dancefloor-oriented sound, though it remains firmly rooted in the IDM tradition of complexity. Following the more varied 'Body Riddle', this album stripped away the live instrumentation in favor of a brutalist electronic palette. It is widely considered one of the most aggressive entries in his discography, characterized by heavy use of compression and distortion that pushes the limits of digital audio. The album was recorded during a period of transition for Clark, moving away from his earlier 'Chris Clark' moniker to simply 'Clark', signaling a more streamlined and focused aesthetic. Critics noted its 'punishing' nature, often comparing it to the more abrasive works of Aphex Twin or Autechre, but with a distinct, propulsive techno heartbeat that is uniquely Clark's.
