Transmission Suite marks a significant return for 808 State, being their first studio album in seventeen years. Recorded at the former Granada Studios in Manchester, the album is deeply influenced by the history of its location, channeling the 'ghosts' of the city's broadcasting past. Graham Massey and Andrew Barker (in his final recording with the group) moved away from the more polished, guest-vocal-heavy approach of their late 90s work to return to a hardware-focused, instrumental sound. The record draws heavily from the 'Bleep' techno sound of the North of England, characterized by heavy sub-bass and minimalist melodic lines. Critics noted the album's 'brutalist' quality, praising its refusal to lean on nostalgia while still honoring the group's legacy as pioneers of the UK electronic scene. It stands as a bridge between the raw acid house of 1988 and the sophisticated, experimental techno of the 21st century.
