Tough Love

Released in late 2014, Tough Love is the debut full-length effort from Montclair, New Jersey's Forth Wanderers. The album solidified the band's unique songwriting process, where guitarist Ben Guterl sends instrumental demos to vocalist Ava Trilling, who then writes lyrics and melodies in isolation. This distance is audible in the music; the guitars are busy and technically demanding, while the vocals remain grounded and conversational. Sonically, the album sits at the intersection of the 2010s 'bedroom pop' aesthetic and the revival of 90s indie rock and Midwest emo. It was recorded with a lo-fi sensibility that emphasizes the physical act of playing, from the slide of fingers on guitar strings to the thud of the kick drum. Critically, it was praised for its maturity and the chemistry between the two primary songwriters, establishing Forth Wanderers as a key voice in the independent rock scene of the East Coast.
