Through the Ashes of Empires

Through the Ashes of Empires is widely regarded as the 'redemption' record for Machine Head. Released in 2003, it marked a decisive pivot away from the nu-metal influences of 'The Burning Red' and 'Supercharger,' returning to the thrash-inflected groove metal that defined their 1994 debut. The recording process was fraught; the band was without a US record deal and operating as a trio for much of the writing process after the departure of Ahrue Luster. The addition of guitarist Phil Demmel (formerly of Vio-lence) proved to be the missing piece, reintroducing the dual-guitar harmonies and technical soloing that would become a hallmark of their later work. The album's success in Europe was so overwhelming that Roadrunner Records US re-signed the band to release it domestically. It remains a cornerstone of 2000s metal, praised for its ambitious songwriting and Robb Flynn's deeply personal, often harrowing lyrical themes regarding his upbringing and struggles with the music industry.
