The Siket Disc

The Siket Disc is a unique artifact in the Phish discography, consisting of instrumental improvisations culled from the 1998 'The Story of the Ghost' sessions at Bearsville Studios. Named after engineer John Siket and curated by keyboardist Page McConnell, the album represents the band's peak 'ambient' period. Unlike their structured studio albums, these tracks are edited excerpts of long-form jams, emphasizing the band's ability to create cohesive, atmospheric soundscapes without predetermined song structures. The centerpiece, 'What's the Use?', has since become a legendary live staple, known for its extreme use of silence and slow-build dynamics. Critically, the album is viewed as a bold experimental detour that aligns Phish more closely with post-rock and IDM influences of the late 90s than with traditional jam band tropes. It remains their most minimalist and texture-focused official release.
