The Mountain

Released in 1999, The Mountain represents a pivotal moment in Steve Earle's career, marking his first full-length foray into bluegrass. Following the death of bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe in 1996, Earle sought to honor Monroe’s legacy by writing a suite of original songs specifically for the genre's traditional instrumental configuration. To execute this vision, he partnered with the Del McCoury Band, arguably the finest bluegrass ensemble of the era. The resulting collaboration bypassed the 'Newgrass' trends of the time, opting instead for a 'high lonesome' sound that felt both ancient and urgent. Critics, including those at AllMusic, hailed the album for its authenticity and Earle's ability to adapt his gritty narrative style to the rigorous demands of bluegrass.
