The Internationale

Released in May 1990, The Internationale is a transitional and highly thematic mini-album in Billy Bragg's discography. Following the success of Workers Playtime, this 7-track collection saw Bragg moving away from the 'Motown-meets-Folk' sound toward a more explicit engagement with traditional socialist songcraft. The album is notable for Bragg's updated lyrics to the title track, which replaced archaic 19th-century terminology with a more inclusive, modern internationalist perspective. Recording-wise, it features a unique blend of Bragg's scratchy electric guitar with more formal arrangements, including the participation of the Welsh choir on 'The Internationale' and 'The Red Flag'. The album serves as both a tribute to his influences (notably Phil Ochs and Woody Guthrie) and a sharp critique of contemporary British and international politics, specifically addressing the human cost of the conflict in Northern Ireland on the final track. It remains one of his most overtly ideological works, bridging the gap between his early punk-folk roots and his later role as a curator of the radical folk tradition.
