The Guitar as Orchestra

Released in 1995 on the experimental Discipline Global Mobile label, 'The Guitar as Orchestra' represents Adrian Belew's most ambitious departure from traditional rock structures. While Belew's career is defined by his 'animal' guitar noises and pop sensibilities, this album is a strictly instrumental, symphonic work. Every sound heard on the ten tracks was generated by Belew using a guitar and a Roland GR-50 guitar synthesizer, then meticulously layered to mimic the sections of a classical orchestra. The album was received as a technical tour de force, showcasing Belew's deep understanding of arrangement and his ability to transcend the limitations of his primary instrument. It sits alongside the work of Frank Zappa's Synclavier experiments or Wendy Carlos's early Moog recordings as a landmark of instrumental synthesis. Tracks like 'Seven E Flat Elephants...' reference his signature wildlife motifs, but place them within a sophisticated, avant-garde compositional framework.
