The English Riviera

The English Riviera marks the definitive evolution of Metronomy from a bedroom-based solo project into a fully realized art-pop ensemble. Released in 2011, it saw Joseph Mount relocate the project's conceptual focus to his native Devon, specifically the 'English Riviera' of Torbay. Sonically, the album is a departure from the frantic, 'wonky' electronics of earlier work, opting instead for a clean, minimalist aesthetic influenced by 1970s soft rock and early synth-pop. Despite the departure of Gabriel Stebbing, his bass work remains a central pillar of the album's sound, providing a melodic counterpoint to Mount's airy falsetto.
