Swim

Released in 1996, Swim serves as the definitive introduction to Feeder, predating their debut full-length Polythene. While the band would eventually become synonymous with polished, melodic British rock, this EP captures them in a much rawer, grunge-indebted state. Recorded during a period when the UK was pivoting from Britpop back toward heavier alternative sounds, Swim leans heavily into the 'quiet-loud' dynamic popularized by American peers like the Pixies and Nirvana, but with a distinctly British sense of melodic melancholy. The track 'Stereo World' would later be re-recorded for their debut album, but the versions found here possess a murky, analog warmth that was largely ironed out in later productions. Critics at the time noted the band's ability to balance Grant Nicholas's vulnerable, often dark lyricism with a massive wall of guitar sound.
