Released in 2001, Sweet Tea represents a pivotal 'reinvention' moment for Buddy Guy. After years of producing polished, guest-heavy albums for the Silvertone label, Guy traveled to Dennis Herring's Sweet Tea Studio in Oxford, Mississippi, to record a set primarily composed of songs by Hill Country legends like Junior Kimbrough and T-Model Ford. The resulting record is an anomaly in his catalog, eschewing his signature 'stinging' Chicago lead style for a heavy, rhythmic drone and thick, distorted textures. The album was highly influential in the early-2000s blues revival, signaling a shift toward raw, 'authentic' sounds that would later be popularized by artists like The Black Keys.
