Square the Circle

Square the Circle, released in 1988, represents the refined late-period sound of the German progressive rock band Rousseau. While many of their contemporaries had moved toward pop-rock or neo-prog by the late 80s, Rousseau doubled down on their signature pastoral style. The album is almost entirely instrumental, centered on the virtuosic but tasteful flute work of Christoph Huster. Sonically, it bridges the gap between the symphonic grandeur of Camel and the folk-inflected art rock of Focus, though with a distinctly German 'Kosmische' softness.
