Songs of the Free

Released in 1982, Songs of the Free is the third studio album by Gang of Four and marks a significant shift toward a more accessible, dance-oriented sound. Following the departure of founding bassist Dave Allen, the band recruited Sara Lee, whose melodic and steady bass lines provided a counterpoint to Andy Gill's aggressive, non-linear guitar work. Produced by Gill and Jon King, the album incorporates elements of disco and synth-pop without sacrificing the band's signature analytical lyricism. The lead single, 'I Love a Man in a Uniform,' became a minor hit but was famously banned by the BBC during the Falklands War due to its perceived anti-military stance. Critics often cite this album as a bridge between the abrasive post-punk of 'Entertainment!' and the more commercial directions of the mid-80s.
