Something More Than Free

Released on July 17, 2015, Something More Than Free is the fifth studio album by singer-songwriter Jason Isbell. The record was produced by Dave Cobb, who returned to work with Isbell following their collaboration on the breakthrough 2013 album Southeastern. Recorded with a focus on warm, organic, and stripped-back arrangements, the album features Isbell's signature literary songwriting backed by subtle folk rock and country rock instrumentation, including prominent fiddle, acoustic guitar, and pedal steel.

At the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, the album achieved significant recognition, winning the award for Best Americana Album, while its lead single, "24 Frames," won the award for Best American Roots Song. Commercial success followed its critical acclaim; the album debuted at number 6 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Top Rock Albums, Folk Albums, and Top Country Albums charts, marking Isbell's first major multi-genre chart-topping success. Sonically, the album represents a slightly more outward-looking, band-oriented, yet deeply intimate continuation of the acoustic-focused style established on his previous work.
