Sitra Ahra represents a pivotal moment in Therion's discography, serving as the first studio album following the departure of nearly the entire band lineup after Gothic Kabbalah. Mastermind Christofer Johnsson assembled a new collective, including vocalist Thomas Vikström, to execute a vision that leaned more heavily into 1970s progressive rock influences while maintaining the band's signature symphonic metal foundation. Recorded at the legendary Polar Studios in Stockholm, the album's production emphasizes a warmer, more analog feel compared to its predecessors. Lyrically, it continues the band's long-standing collaboration with occultist Thomas Karlsson, focusing on the 'Other Side' in Kabbalistic thought. The album is notable for its stylistic diversity, ranging from the aggressive, short-form 'Din' to the experimental, multi-movement 'Land of Canaan,' which features unconventional instrumentation for the genre, such as harmonica and Jews' harp.
