Recorded in 2005 under the pseudonym May Jailer, Sirens is an unreleased demo album that represents a complete stylistic contrast to the artist's later work. Composed entirely of acoustic guitar and vocals, the 15-track collection is devoid of electronic production, hip-hop beats, or orchestral arrangements. Instead, it aligns closely with the mid-2000s indie folk movement, drawing comparisons to early Jewel or Liz Phair. The vocal delivery is notably different from her later signature croon, utilizing a higher, more delicate register that reviewers likened to a 'little bird.' The album leaked via YouTube in May 2012, shortly after the release of Born to Die, offering fans and musicologists an invaluable look at her formative songwriting and raw, unpolished performance style.
