Roots

Released in 2004, Roots represents a deliberate 'back-to-basics' manifesto for the Gipsy Kings. After years of exploring pop-crossover territory with producers like Claude Martinez, the band retreated to a farmhouse in the Crau region of France with producer Craig Street (known for his work with Norah Jones and Cassandra Wilson). The goal was to capture the band in their most natural state: acoustic, live, and without the 'rumba-pop' artifice of synthesizers or electric bass. The resulting 16 tracks are remarkably sparse, relying almost entirely on nylon-string guitars, handclaps (palmas), and upright bass. This recording context highlights the band's technical virtuosity and their deep connection to the Gitano tradition. Critics praised the album for its authenticity, noting that it reclaimed the band's dignity from the 'wedding band' stereotypes, positioning them instead as masters of folk-hewn world music. It stands as the most intimate and sonically honest entry in their extensive discography.
