Romulus Hunt: A Family Opera

Commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera Guild and the Kennedy Center, Romulus Hunt: A Family Opera represents Carly Simon's most ambitious genre departure. Released in 1993 on the classical label Angel Records, the work is a 'family opera' that tackles the mature themes of divorce, custody, and the psychological impact on children. Unlike her previous studio albums, Simon remains primarily behind the scenes as composer and co-librettist (with Jacob Brackman), entrusting the performance to a cast of five operatic singers. Sonically, the album is defined by its chamber-sized orchestration, eschewing a full symphonic sound for a more intimate, transparent arrangement of piano and woodwinds. This transparency highlights the narrative clarity of the libretto. The album serves as a bridge between Simon's pop sensibilities and the traditions of American musical theater and contemporary opera.
