Reprieve

Released in 2006, Reprieve represents a pivotal sonic shift for Ani DiFranco, moving away from the full-band funk-folk of the early 2000s toward a solitary, experimental aesthetic. Recorded primarily in her home studio in New Orleans and in a temporary space in Buffalo, the album is heavily influenced by the physical and emotional landscape of post-Katrina New Orleans. DiFranco collaborated with producer Mike Napolitano to incorporate 'found sounds' and electronic manipulations, such as the sound of a New Orleans streetcar or manipulated industrial noise, which serve as rhythmic foundations for several tracks. This 'electronic folk' approach was polarizing for some long-time fans but praised by critics for its maturity and atmospheric depth. The album is notable for its lack of traditional drumming, relying instead on DiFranco's rhythmic guitar work and synthetic pulses.
