Pulse Two

Released in 1991 on the Jumpin' & Pumpin' label, Pulse Two is the second installment in a series of EPs that showcased the early, more dancefloor-oriented experiments of Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans. While the duo would eventually achieve global fame for the lush, organic ambient of 'Lifeforms', this EP finds them working with a much harsher, more industrial palette. The tracks are characterized by aggressive breakbeats, deep dub basslines, and a pioneering use of sampling that hints at the IDM movement to come. 'Stolen Documents' is a standout for its fusion of noir-jazz aesthetics with cold, mechanical techno, while 'Zip Code' pushes the energy into more frantic, high-tempo territory. Critically, the EP is viewed as a vital document of the 'hardcore' transition period in British electronic music, where artists began to deconstruct the rave sound into more abstract and atmospheric forms. It remains a cult favorite among collectors of early UK techno and FSOL completists.
