Prayers & Observations

Released in 2005 on the influential Jazzland Recordings label, Prayers & Observations is the sophomore effort from Norwegian vocalist Torun Eriksen. Following her debut Glittercard, this album solidified her place in the 'New Conception of Jazz' scene spearheaded by producer Bugge Wesseltoft. The record is a masterclass in the Scandinavian jazz aesthetic: cool, spacious, and meticulously recorded. Eriksen wrote all ten tracks herself, showcasing a songwriting style that blends the melodic accessibility of pop with the harmonic sophistication of jazz. The ensemble features her long-term collaborators, including David Wallumrød on keyboards and Frøydis Grorud on saxophone, whose contributions are woven seamlessly into the minimalist fabric of the arrangements. Critically, the album was praised for its spiritual depth and the 'unbearable lightness' of its production, marking a high point in mid-2000s European vocal jazz.
