Point of View serves as the 1985 debut of Cassandra Wilson and a foundational document of the M-Base (Macro-Basic Array of Structured Extemporization) collective. Recorded in Brooklyn for the German JMT label, the album features key collaborators like Steve Coleman and Grachan Moncur III. Unlike the Americana-infused blues-jazz that would later define Wilson's career (starting with 1993's Blue Moon Daughter), this record is firmly rooted in the avant-garde and post-bop scenes of the mid-80s. The arrangements are characterized by 'overcrowded ensembles' and complex, syncopated time signatures that challenge the vocalist to find melodic paths through rhythmic thickets.
