Passio

Released in 1988 on ECM New Series, Passio (Passio Domini nostri Jesu Christi secundum Joannem) represents the pinnacle of Arvo Pärt's tintinnabuli period. While Pärt had achieved fame with shorter works like 'Fratres' and 'Spiegel im Spiegel,' Passio demonstrated that his minimalist language could sustain a monumental, large-scale narrative. The work is a setting of the Passion of Christ according to the Gospel of John, performed in Latin. The Hilliard Ensemble, under the direction of Paul Hillier, delivers a performance of terrifying precision and restraint. The recording took place in St. Jude-on-the-Hill, London, utilizing the natural reverberation of the space to create a sense of vast, hallowed emptiness. Critically, the album was a landmark for ECM, helping to define the 'spiritual minimalism' movement and cementing Pärt's status as a composer who could bridge the gap between medieval tradition and modern avant-garde.
