Overpass

Recorded in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2018 and released in 2021, Overpass is Marc Johnson's first solo bass album and his first leader date for ECM in a decade. Produced by Johnson and his wife, pianist Eliane Elias, the album is a radical departure from his usual ensemble work, focusing entirely on the unaccompanied acoustic double bass. The repertoire is a mix of five original compositions and three covers, including 'Nardis' and 'Love Theme from Spartacus,' both of which are nods to Johnson's tenure as the final bassist for the Bill Evans Trio. The recording emphasizes the physical properties of the instrument, utilizing the pristine, spacious acoustics characteristic of Manfred Eicher's label. Critics have noted Johnson's ability to maintain a 'conversation with himself,' using melodic ingenuity and rhythmic patterns to fill the sonic void left by the absence of other instruments. It stands as a significant document of late-career virtuosity and a rare entry in the solo jazz bass canon.
