Opiate

Released in 1992, Opiate serves as the definitive introduction to Tool's early alternative metal sound. While the band would later become synonymous with progressive metal, this EP is characterized by shorter song structures and a more traditional 4/4 rhythmic foundation, though hints of their future complexity appear in tracks like 'Sweat.' The recording is notable for its inclusion of two live tracks, 'Cold and Ugly' and 'Jerk-Off,' which were recorded at the Jellö Loft to capture the band's reputation as a formidable live act. Lyrically, the album is confrontational, with 'Hush' famously addressing the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) and censorship. The title track, 'Opiate,' introduces the band's long-standing critique of organized religion. It remains a fan favorite for its raw production and the aggressive, clanking bass tone of original bassist Paul D'Amour, which defined the band's early aesthetic before Justin Chancellor joined.
