Nightsongs

Released in 2001, Nightsongs marks the debut of Stars, then primarily a duo consisting of Torquil Campbell and Chris Seligman. Recorded before the band expanded into the six-piece indie-rock powerhouse known for 'Set Yourself on Fire,' this album is a much more electronic, downtempo affair. It was released on the boutique label Le Grand Magistery, known for its curated, aesthetic-heavy roster. The record is notable for its 'bedroom' production quality, utilizing drum machines and synthesizers to create a hushed, intimate atmosphere that contrasts with the cinematic sweep of their later work. It features early vocal contributions from Amy Millan (who would later join the band permanently) and Emily Haines of Metric, establishing the male-female vocal dynamic that became the band's signature. The inclusion of a Smiths cover ('This Charming Man') signaled their debt to British indie-pop sensibilities, while the 'AM' and 'FM' mixes of 'My Radio' highlight the album's thematic obsession with communication and distance.
