Newk’s Time

Recorded in September 1957 and released in early 1959, Newk's Time (Blue Note 4001) stands as one of Sonny Rollins' most aggressive and rhythmically adventurous outings. The title refers to Rollins' nickname 'Newk,' given due to his resemblance to pitcher Don Newcombe. This record is particularly significant for its sparse arrangements and the intense collaboration between Rollins and drummer Philly Joe Jones. While Rollins is often celebrated for his piano-less trios, the presence of Wynton Kelly on piano here provides a sophisticated harmonic foil that allows Rollins to lean into his more avant-garde tendencies without losing the hard bop swing.
