Released in 2001 on Grisman's Acoustic Disc label, New River represents a significant stylistic intersection in David Grisman’s career. While Grisman is the architect of 'Dawg Music' - a blend of bluegrass, swing, and Latin sounds - this collaboration with Denny Zeitlin leans heavily into the jazz side of that equation. Zeitlin, a psychiatrist and renowned jazz pianist known for his work with Bill Evans and his own experimental forays, brings a cerebral, harmonically dense approach that pushes Grisman out of traditional folk structures. The album consists of nine tracks, split almost evenly between original compositions from both artists. The lack of a rhythm section highlights the percussive nature of both instruments, turning the mandolin into a high-tuned foil for the piano’s expansive range.
