Released in 1992, Money represents a pivotal moment in KMFDM's transition toward a more streamlined, techno-influenced industrial sound. Originally conceived as a collaborative project titled 'Apart' between Sascha Konietzko and En Esch, the final product primarily features Konietzko's contributions after internal tensions led to a split in the recording process. This resulted in a more cohesive, albeit singular, vision of the 'Ultra-Heavy Beat.' The album is notable for its heavy use of sampling, particularly in how it treats the electric guitar as a percussive element rather than a lead instrument. Critics at the time, including those from AllMusic and Spin, noted the shift toward atmospheric, drone-heavy textures and dance-floor ready BPMs. While some contemporary reviewers criticized the inclusion of remixes from the previous album 'Naïve,' the new material like 'Sex on the Flag' and 'Money' became definitive tracks for the band, cementing their status as leaders of the Wax Trax! industrial scene.
