Midget Tossing

Released in 1997, Midget Tossing is the debut studio album by Yellowcard, featuring the band's original lineup including vocalist Ben Dobson. Unlike the Ryan Key era which defined the band's commercial peak, this record is firmly rooted in skate punk and hardcore influences. The album was recorded at a time when the band was still a local fixture in Jacksonville, Florida. Sonically, it is characterized by high-speed tempos, aggressive vocal delivery, and a lo-fi production aesthetic that prioritizes energy over clarity. The inclusion of Sean Mackin on violin was already a distinguishing factor, though his contributions here are much more abrasive and integrated into the punk chaos than the melodic leads found on Ocean Avenue. Critical reception at the time, including from outlets like Ink 19, noted the band's potential and the novelty of the violin in a punk context, though the album remained a cult artifact until the band's later mainstream success brought renewed interest to their early discography.
