Lunático

Released in 2006, Lunático is the second studio album by the Paris-based trio Gotan Project. While their debut, La Revancha del Tango, focused on the novelty of the tango-electronic fusion, Lunático represents a deeper, more organic integration of the two worlds. Recorded partly at the legendary Studio ION in Buenos Aires, the album features a larger ensemble of live musicians, including members of the Orquesta de cuerdas and the pianist Gustavo Beytelmann. This shift results in a more 'live' feel compared to their earlier work, with a greater emphasis on jazz-inflected arrangements and cinematic scope. The album's title is a tribute to the legendary racehorse owned by tango icon Carlos Gardel, signaling the group's reverence for the genre's roots. Critics noted the album's increased complexity and its successful experimentation with hip-hop elements, particularly on tracks like 'Mi confesión.' It solidified Gotan Project's role as the primary architects of the 'electro-tango' movement, moving beyond lounge-music tropes into a more serious, avant-garde territory.
