Koop Islands

Released in 2006, Koop Islands serves as the final statement from the Swedish duo Magnus Zingmark and Oscar Simonsson. While their previous work, Waltz for Koop, established them as leaders in the nu jazz movement, this album pushed their sample-based methodology to its zenith. The duo spent years meticulously cutting and pasting individual notes and phrases from old jazz records to create entirely new compositions that sound like live recordings. This specific album departs from their earlier European lounge sound by incorporating 1930s swing and Caribbean 'exotica' influences.
