Killer Instinct

Released on Halloween in 2011, Killer Instinct serves as the debut mixtape and foundational document for Bryson Tiller. Recorded while Tiller was working at UPS and Papa John's in Louisville, Kentucky, the project is a 21-track exploration of contemporary R&B and hip-hop. It predates his 'TrapSoul' branding but contains all the DNA of that movement: the blend of singing and rapping, the focus on late-night moods, and the use of trap-influenced percussion. The mixtape features covers and remixes of artists like Drake and Trey Songz, showcasing Tiller's ability to reinterpret existing hits through his own melancholic lens. While the production quality is distinctly lo-fi and 'bedroom' in nature, the project gained significant underground traction on SoundCloud, eventually serving as the catalyst for his professional career. It is a rare look at a superstar in his most unrefined state.
