Jacob's Ladder

Recorded during the global isolation of 2020 and 2021, Jacob's Ladder represents Brad Mehldau's most explicit embrace of his progressive rock roots. Moving away from the acoustic piano trio format, Mehldau utilizes a wide array of synthesizers and guest vocalists (including Becca Stevens and Safia McKinney-Askeur) to construct a conceptual narrative based on the Book of Genesis. The album is structured around two central three-part suites and includes radical reinterpretations of tracks by Rush and Gentle Giant. Sonically, it bridges the gap between the virtuosic fusion of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and the modern classical leanings of Mehldau's later work.
